We opted to stay in Matemwe after hiking Kilimanjaro and going on a safari. We wanted to relax and escape to a beach before going back to work - and we really chose the right place! First, Matemwe is a small stretch of beach in the north that doesn't have much besides a few resorts. It's quiet and we often had the entire white sand beach to ourselves! With that being said, there were a few resorts close by - within a five to ten minute walk there were several options for pool visits, drinks, and dinners. The dive shop was conveniently next door (One Ocean) and Matemwe is the closest area to the atoll, making the boat trip out the shortest.
I cannot say enough nice things about Julie and Eddie, the owners. They are incredibly sweet and welcoming. We felt as though we were their house guests, not just tourists coming to stay at their B&B. They greeted us New Year's Eve with champagne when we checked in, and had even made us a dinner reservation to ensure we had somewhere to eat that evening! They were so friendly and we really enjoyed chatting with them each day. In addition, they were helpful for knowledge about the island, what to do, and booking services (from taxis, to excursions, to where to eat and where to get a good massage). We would definitely stay here again should we come back to Zanzibar.
The cottage itself was right on the beach, and the property was secured by a gate and a guard. We saw the ocean the minute we walked out of the door, and the room was westernized with a new bathroom, ac, an a mosquito net. It was lovely. The breakfast they provided each morning was more than enough - fresh fruit, hard boiled eggs, deli meat, and cheese.
We were so disappointed to have to leave!

We stayed at the Matemwe Cloves Cottage and B&B just after the new year in January 2015. I cannot say enough great things about our stay.
First, the location is fantastic. The B&B is right on the beach and a short walk to bars/restaurants and scuba and other activities. The hosts (Eddie and Julie) are amazing and can arrange spice tours, boat trips and other Zanzibar activities. They have a great knowledge of the island and are a fantastic resource and extremely friendly and helpful.
Although it is a B&B - each room is really its own standalone bungalow and the Cottage is its own standalone one bedroom - so there is plenty of privacy. We stayed in the cottage which was spacious enough for 4 adults or a family, was very clean, had mosquito nets, a small kitchen, its own small outdoor table and dining area/porch space. The B&B compound is surrounded by a wall and we had a safe in our room. There is also a guard on duty at night and we always felt very secure.
The B&B has a deck where you eat breakfast ( included and was always great) and look out at the ocean. There is not a restaurant on site but you are less than a 5 minute walk from good options (same is true for bars).
Matemwe is a sleepy town but this stretch of beach was amazingly beautiful. If you are looking for a party this is not the place for you but if you want a great beach, nearby restaurants and bars, access to the scuba and/or snorkeling and just a relaxing vacation this is the place for you!
