Great stay - could make a couple of improvements

We have just returned from Funana after a week-long stay with friends. I have to admit we were quite nervous after reading some of the reviews however, honestly there was nothing to worry about. The hotel is rated a 5 star but having been to multiple 5* hotels across the world this slightly falls short in my opinion. Nevertheless we did have a really good time and even tried to extend our stay however could change the flights. The hotel is well maintained and clean, the staff do work really hard our room was cleaned to a good standard everyday . The restaurants are all good. I'm a fussy eater and I managed to eat 3 meals a day. The pools are nice however, we did find if you went to the beach for the morning and returned to the pool for the afternoon you would struggle to get a bed as you would have the normal towel on the bed and no one to be seen all day 🤔. The animation team does well in trying to keep everyone entertained, I will say the white party was brilliant so much fun and a lot of effort put into putting on a great show. For me the beach was my favourite spot as it is absolutely stunning. The beach was clean, the sea was lovely and clear. Was slightly disappointed with the choice of drinks on offer at the beach bar however being on the beach did make up for it. There are lucky lucky men selling trips on your way down to the beach they don't hassle you they are very polite and if your not interested then a polite "no thank you" is all that is needed. They are a lot cheaper than Tui. We booked a couple of trips with Walter and weren't disappointed. The weather was absolutely fantastic and the constant breeze is well appreciated however be careful it leads you into a false sense of security, so still apply cream often. The drinks around the complex were generally not great, if you like your cocktails you will probably be a little disappointed as they are not great. The beer and wine was ok, a lot of the time the soft drinks were flat. I would advise taking your own cooler mug for a couple of reasons. One you get more drink in them as the glasses are small so less trips to the bar, two the cleanliness of some of the plastic glasses are a bit dubious. Things I would say needs improving to make this a standard of 5* • Water to be made accessible round the complex either in fridges so people can help themselves. • Would expect soft drinks and beer in fridges in room, not just two bottles of water. • Aircon in rooms could be better don't think ours dropped below 22c • Quality of the spirits wasn't great. I would definitely return as we thoroughly enjoyed our time there. …

Ideal para o refugio de família. Optima piscina, com bar, e acesso fácil à praia. Serviço impecável, a todos os níveis. Tive pena de ter ficado tão pouco tempo. Parece que em Julho e Agosto é a melhor altura, por ter menos vento. Unico reparo, é o acesso às esgruiçadeiras na zona da piscina. Há quem marque antes do pequeno almoço e só aparece ao fim da tarde...

Very good

We couldn’t fault the hotel; I know some picky people have. Staff were friendly and engaging, rooms were clean, food was good and the bars and entertainment were excellent. You’re there to be on holiday, not to check for paint chips. Really, if I had to pick something, the bath towels were too small 😂

Lovely place, great food, fantastic staff - highly recommended

We are just back from a fabulous 10 days at the Riu Funana, travelling with 3 generations of family, ranging from 82 to 32yrs, the youngest having special needs. Upon arrival we found the Reception team to be helpful and friendly, and this continued whenever we needed to ask them anything during our stay. The fridge in one of our rooms wasn't working when we got there but this was fixed before we'd even got back to the room, as was a door handle which stopped working. Honestly, a few of our party did get upset stomachs, but not the two who are usually most prone, and whether that was food, ice in the drinks (which we tried to avoid) or a bug, we will never know. When I needed to take some food from the main restaurant back to my parents room, the staff could not have been more helpful or attentive, and I would like to extend my extreme gratitude to them. I have some dietary restrictions which meant there was quite a lot in the buffets which was off-limits for me, but there was always more than enough for me to choose from. All the dishes were topped up/replaced as soon as they ran out, and I saw the desserts being temperature-checked. There are flies, particularly if you choose to eat outside, but that can happen anywhere. The rooms are kept immaculately clean, and the staff are always helpful if you need anything. There are a few areas that could do with some maintenance, but that appeared to be tended to, and there are obvious limitations as to how much can be done without interfering with guests' holidays - I think the balance was very well made. The pools were huge, beautifully clean and had plenty of sunbeds. The bar staff were good fun and the drinks were plentiful (and quite strong at times - but you could just add more lemonade to it!!). There were also plenty of staff clearing up cups/glasses which may have been left around the pool so it was always kept neat and clean. The white sand beach was a short walk away, and was stunning. The turtle hatchery was an added bonus and the staff there were very informative. We found sunbathing under the palm-trees idyllic, and again there were plenty of sunbeds. There was limited choice of drinks at the beach bar, but that wasn't a problem. The sea was clear and warm, even if the waves were a bit strong (yellow flag) and we enjoyed swimming there. Although, maybe a bit much for the less-confident swimmer. The animations team work hard all day long and appear to love their jobs. We didn't watch much of the evening entertainment, preferring to sit around and chat, but there was always something going on. The team welcomed us on the first day and were always friendly but never pushy - perfect. Due to various members of our group feeling poorly, we didn't explore much out of the resort - and didn't feel we needed to and there was always something to do within the resort. We did take a taxi into Santa Maria where we found there to be very little other than tourist-type shops selling the same thing. The (short) pier was interesting, with huge fish being bought and sold. Overall, I would recommend the resort, particularly for its food, beach, pool and staff. We had a lovely holiday there, and have great memories of a wonderful holiday. …

Lovely holiday but not 5*

Hotel staff and food lovely couldn’t fault any of them at all, the entertainment was brilliant but the hotel in general is not a 5* comparing it to other Riu hotels but I would definitely return 😊 there was no sickness that I heard of while I was there the hotel is very very clean. Our room was immaculate every day. Don’t listen to any of the negative reviews regarding the sickness please. Overall experience very good
