This description of Quinta do Tarrio, taken from the Manor Houses web site, needs revision. The description led me to book the accommodation . My main reason to select this property is the description of the “adega” (I am a wine maker). It turns out to be the ruins of an adega, not used in many years. The equipment is there is the form of ruins. As to gardens and lawns, perhaps “gardens and lawns waiting to be replanted” would be a fair description. Also grapes ready to be pruned, what a shame. Add to that a moldly smelling bedroom and a significant electric shock in the shower from defective plumbing, clearly a health hazard. We left the window open to rid the moldy smell which invited some farmyard and dog noise. The bed itself was excellent, far above the Portugal standard. The proprietors are very nice, speak excellent English, and the breakfast fully acceptable. Quite frankly, it is clear that there are better values to be found. I contacted the Manor Houses web site with a complaint (suggesting a site inspection) so you may see a revision of the description. …

Very Rural

A sweet old farm manor house which at this time of year can feel cold and damp. The owners are a lovely Swedish couple who speak English fluently. The room was a little run down but clean and functional. Although we asked to be upgraded to a room with a bath we couldn't be obliged due to the need for her to prepare each room (ie heat it to get rid of the cold. It is an old stone walled property after all). Unfortunately the weather was dreadful and it caused problems with the water system. But I stress that it was freak weather and I doubt that it happens very often so don't be put off. Breakfast was fine and the views over the surrounding farms are lovely. As it is a B&B you have to go to the local restaurant which serves very nice food. Take a phrase book or be prepared to struggle along in a mish mash of German and Italian and avoid the Barcelos local wine! (Well I say that but it was only 4 euros so what can you expect!) Oh and as it was nearing winter the pool was empty so check before you go if thats what you are looking for. …
