Had a great time at Orvis Hill Country in Fairfield. The place is beautiful, the sporting clays course is well set up, and the staff is friendly. They make sure everyone feels comfortable - whether you're new or experienced.
They take safety seriously and offer solid instruction if you want to improve. The whole place is well-run and just a great spot to shoot. Would definitely go back.

Excellent facility. Hosted large corporate event which was excellent. Staff is first class and property is amazing and pretty close to DC area. They are opening Polaris Adventures course soon which will be great for kids.

I am a lifelong fisherman and a novice hunter but I had yet to figure out how to open the door to upland game hunting. Orvis guy Reid Bryant in his Hunting and Shooting podcast mentioned this new facility that Orvis just opened, the Orvis Hill Country Shooting Grounds and I filed it back in my brain that I should get to it someday. This place was reachable from Northern VA. It's not far from Camp David. I am so glad I made it.
Orvis took an old farmhouse and converted it and about 300 acres into a clays shooting school, a sporting clays course (that's like golf except you shoot clay pigeons coming from different directions at each of the "holes") and a clubhouse that won't embarrass you. By embarrass I mean it is classy without being over the top (I never once used my Monty Python accent), but classy enough that nobody is going to wear bloody camo there either. I started thinking, I might be able to get my wife interested in this...
Here's the deal. I met an old friend at Orvis' Hill Country for a day of shooting. Neither of us had shot clays in a while and we wanted to get some practice in. I signed us up for a lesson at 11 am with the pro and a reservation to go through the sporting clays course with a trapper (the guy who launches the clays) at 1 pm. We walked into the sweet, low key farmhouse. Orvis had indeed redone it. There was a crackling fire in the shop fireplace where I was surrounded by beautiful shooting gear. Michael behind the counter welcomed us and explained how our day was to unfold. Wandering into the gun room it indeed smelled of Hoppe's 9 (gun oil your grandfather used) and everybody just looked happy to be alive.
Then we were introduced to all manner of big wigs, machers as we used to say in New Jersey, including the head of Orvis Santanona (an Orvis shooting ground north of NYC) and the director of Orvis Adventures (there's an awesome job). Wondering why all these folks were hanging around I learned that Orvis was having a board meeting nearby and the board was all coming to dinner in the barn later in the day which meant a bunch of people named Perkins were on the way. The Perkins own Orvis. Catholics have the Father, Son and Holy Ghost. Orvis has the Perkins. These folks are famously low key and my buddy and I stayed out of the way.
We took our lesson with a wonderful, smart, and patient teacher who not long ago was a competitive shooter. Then we ran through the sporting clays course with a local fellow who blew us away with some of the area lore. Nope, you'll have to get those stories yourselves. We brought our own lunch and ate in the farmhouse. It was a perfectly lovely day. A lesson and a run through the course will take about a half a day.
If you've got some bucks, join the whole club. There will be actual upland game shooting on the property and all manner of access and perks. If you are a public lands guy like me, the costs for lessons and the course are totally reasonable. They don't even look down on you for bringing your own cheap Cabelas ammo (although a guest on one of Reid's podcasts explained why I can't hit anything with it).
Here's what's so great. If you are an expert, you can go to the Hill country and fit in like an old glove. If you are brand new and you just want to try on this sport, you can walk in with zero preparation and these wonderful folks will bring you right along. Wear appropriate clothes for a day outside (wing tip shoes are not for wing shooting), bring eye and ear protection, or get it there, and dip your toe into a beautiful lifestyle. You don't need fancy clothes or a beautiful dog. But beware dabblers, you're going to get hooked and your tennis racket and golf clubs might get dusty.
