This was a great example of the benefit of having a guided tour, rather than a self guided tour. Our guide Jim, really bought the story of this sculptor to life in a 1 hour visit that passed very quickly- you are then free to retrace your steps and view the exhibits/ spaces at your own leisure.
An intelligent, humourous and kindly guide, our small group were all most impressed and informed.

Outstanding guided tour by an incredibly knowledgeable docent, who provided the context in understanding how this self-taught sculptor - born in Exeter New Hampshire - Daniel Chester French, came into his own. An honor to visit his actual studio, where he created many stunning pieces!

We didn't know much about this impressive sculptor who designed the statue of Abraham Lincoln for the Lincoln Memorial in Washington DC. He also designed many other statues at the studio in Stockbridge, Mass. that you can visit. We really enjoyed the tour guide who pointed out many things we probably wouldn't have noticed. The studio was really impressive and showed how the sculptor designed the studio to allow the correct amount of light he needed to create his sculptures. His summer house wasn't open to tour because of construction. But the visitor's center, the grounds, the studio and the gardens were very enjoyable. I highly recommend people take the guided tour which starts on the top of the hour. A short video is also available to watch in the visitor's center.

One of the nicest and most interesting of our houses/museums that we visited. Great historical interpretation and Daniel French was an interesting person.

Our visit to Chesterwood was wonderful! Our docent Nancy was extremely knowledgeable and able to answer any and all questions. The tour gives not only an account of French's sculptures but also his life and times. Except for the famous Standing Lincoln, most of the sculptures are inside. However, this does not detract from their impact on the viewer. His studio is quite ingeniously designed. Be sure to continue your tour after the docent ends her presentation. There is really quite a lot to see here.

While we were familiar with Daniel Chester French's most famous works, the seated Lincoln in the Lincoln Memorial in D.C. and the Minuteman statue at Concord, MA. we weren't aware of the quantity and quality of his other works. We learned a lot and really enjoyed the museum/workshop tour and displays.

Super interesting to learn about how French sculpted Lincoln and his other famous (and less famous) statues. The studio tour was really informative and the setting is beautiful. Well worth a visit.

Wonderful look into the life and art of the sculptor Daniel Chester French, known for his Minuteman statue at Concord, Massachusetts, and for the seated Abraham Lincoln in the Lincoln Memorial in our nation's capitol. We opted for a guided tour through the museum and the studio and grounds. In both the museum and the studio, there are many plaster models of French works, which were cast in bronze or sculpted in marble, and are located at the sites for which they were commissioned. Our tour guide Terry was quite knowledgeable and easily able to address our questions and comments. The house is under renovation so we couldn't go inside). The front porch of the studio looks out to a view of Monument Mountain...it's quite spectacular...and reinforces the reason that French and his wife bought this property in the wilderness. The grounds are lovely (there are walkable trails into the woods). We also saw an in-progress sculpture installation on the grounds and installed in the art gallery. A wonderfully interesting stop on our roadtrip!

We visited "Chesterwood", the home of American sculptor Daniel Chester French (1850-1931). He is best know for creating two of our nation's most powerful symbols: the Minute Man statue in Concord, Massachusetts and Abraham Lincoln within the Lincoln Memorial in Washington, DC. We were very impressed with the works of Mr. French.

Nothing terribly fancy here but a lovely location. If you have the slightest interest in the Daniel Chester French, the sculpture who did the Patriot and the statue of Lincoln in the Lincoln Memorial in Washington, DC, this is worth a trip. In August there was an outdoor exhibition of sculpture and I believe that is usually the case during summer months.
