The website says that tours are self-guided, but we went on a weekday in the late morning, and were given a marvelous personal guided tour by a volunteer docent (I'm so sorry I've forgotten her name). She knew volumes about the history of the house and the families that lived there, along with the details of the incredible restoration project that has been going on there for over 20 years. She brought it all to life for us, and we were so glad we went.

A guided tour is not required; you can go around the house by yourself, and there are some explanatory photos and text in each room. But I strongly recommend a guided tour if you can get one. The restoration is a work in progress, and that is part of the fascination of this remarkable and atmospheric place.

This mansion is being restored to its former glory by a group of very dedicated volunteers. What we saw of the house, the first and most of the second floor, has been lovingly rebuilt after it was almost demolished.

If you have any interest in immersing yourself in the Gilded Age, this tour is perfect!! I've been on lots of historic home tours and Ventfort ranks high on my list. Hats off to those responsible in Lenox, Mass for putting so much time, energy and so much money in saving this historic home. As a tourist, you truly get to feel what it must have been like to live in such an age. Our docent gave us a fantastic, very informative tour. This house can be rented for events. I can't imagine a more lovely spot for a wedding.

My daughter and I were on a mother daughter museum trip to the Berkshires and since the Gilded Age is an interest of mine, we headed to Ventfort Hall. I am not sure the "Gilded Age Museum" is what I would call it, but that is not to detract from the wonderful experience we had there! There are placards to read in each room, but do the audio tour because it has a lot more information. We were fortunate enough to be in each room by ourselves for most of our time there which made it extra special. Our time there was informative and interesting. We loved it.

This gilded age mansion was restored by the local community. We had a nice tour of the house with a docent who brought old stories to life and told us all about the renovation. Can you believe they wanted to tear it down!? It is beautiful. Sorry we could not catch a lecture or a concert; try checking online and timing your visit for that

We visited Ventfort Hall Mansion and Gilded Age Museum and it was one of the highlights of our trip. As soon as you pull up and walk toward this magnificent mansion you feel as if you are being transported back in time. We were one of the first ones to arrive few minutes before they opened. A sweet elderly woman, so sorry her name escapes me, was walking up to the front porch. She greeted us and said she would be the one to give us a tour. She rang the bell and a very kind woman answered and let us in. after paying something like $20. for admission and another couple came in, she took us through each part of the house pointing out the details of the history and how this place was renovated. Each room was better than the next, the wood work, and stained glass windows were breath-taking. Many of the items contained in the home were things on loan but fit perfectly in their spots. the outside porch and grounds were beautiful. Beautiful paintings and posters lined the hallways and explained what took place back in the day. Wear comfortable shoes as you will be standing and walking throughout the house, which mind you is a mansion, so lots of rooms to go through and they are actually still renovating the rest of it. My husband and I had a great time and I took a million pictures. Our host was wonderful and we couldn't thank her enough. I would definitely recommend visiting this beautiful place!

Ventfort Hall is a work in progress, but there is plenty to see, and after viewing photos of the home's previously deteriorated state, it's wonderful to see the home being restored to its former glory. The architecture is wonderful, inside and out. The woodwork, ceilings, fireplaces, etc. reflect the craftsmanship of a bygone era.

Traveling through Massachusetts, my husband and I decided to stop in Lenox and visit a Jacobean Revival mansion called Ventfort Hall. It was built during the period of time between the Civil War and the First World War, known as the Gilded Age (1870-1900). Lenox was the socialite place to be in the Berkshires during this time, and Ventfort Hall was one of seventy-five other homes build in the area.

Ventfort Hall has an interesting past. Sister and brother, Sarah and John Pierpont (J.P.) Morgan, each inherited a few million dollars from their father. Sarah married George Hale Morgan in 1866. (He was part of the Morgan family tree but distantly related.) J.P. became a banker, invested wisely and became the richest man in America. Sarah and George purchased the property in 1891 which had a small house on it, which was torn town so that the architectural company of Rotch & Tilden, could build a new house. When Ventfort Hall was completed in 1893, it became their summer home.
Hailed as “one of the most beautiful homes in Lenox,” it had 28 rooms, 15 bedrooms, 13 bathrooms and 17 fireplaces.” Furnished in the period style, it has a soaring three-story great hall, elegant salon with coffered ceiling, paneled library, a formal dining room with glassware, her bedroom, servants bedroom, and child’s room. It was designed with all the latest modern amenities; of ventilated bathrooms, gas and electric light fixtures, an elevator, burglar alarms and central heating. There are also some dominate stained glass window which have the family crest.

After the deaths of both Sarah (in 1896) and George Morgan (in 1911), the house was rented for several years to a young widow, Margaret Vanderbilt in 1910, whose husband, Alfred Gwynne Vanderbilt, died on the Lusitania. In 1925, W. Roscoe and Mary Minturn Bonsal purchased the house after seven years as tenants. After the Bonsals sold Ventfort hall in 1945, the house had a series of owners and was used as a dormitory for Tanglewood students, a summer hotel known as Festival House, the Fokine Ballet Summer Camp and housing for a religious community. On the back patio are two statues memorializing the time of the Ballet period.

Every view looking out of the house is symmetrically framed. Now on 11.7 acres, Ventfort Hall was originally the centerpiece of a large landscaped garden of 26 acres. The mansion, constructed of brick with brownstone trim, has an impressive porte cochère covering the entrance, while the rear of the house, which once had a long view to the south of the Stockbridge Bowl and Monument Mountain, has a wood veranda along its entire length. The property contains several outbuildings: two gatehouses, a carriage house with stable and six greenhouses.

In 1997, with the help of many private donations and loans, and with a loan from the National Trust for Historic Preservation, the Ventfort Hall Association purchased the property and updated it. It is listed on the National Register of Historic Places, and has become The Museum of the Gilded Age. Now two floors are able to be viewed, with more hopefully in the future. There are exhibits to view, lectures are available, theatrical performances are presented, and special events are planned throughout the year. The museum offers a fascinating glimpse into America during this changing and gilded time, and as the last stop on our vacation, it was a very special place to visit. Highly recommended.

This Gilded Age mansion needs more restoration . Although the App for touring each room does not really work, there is sufficient description on the walls. A bit hidden off the road, we enjoyed our short visit!
