My husband and I visited Seton Shrine after passing by the property on another trip last year. We went on two tours. Phyllis was our guide on the first one (Historic Homes) and Erica on the second (Civil War Sisters). Both tours were very well done and very informative. It was only the second time that Erica had done her tour (a new one) and she did not disappoint!! Good job Erica! The property is beautiful and the Basilica is stunning!! A must see!!

There is a peace that comes over you when you come to visit this holy place. There is a lot to see here. Unfortunately, our time was limited as we were invited as guests to witness the return of something special belonging to Mother Seton. We met in the Marian Room, which had lovely display cases filled with statues of the Virgin Mary (as well as icons) from around the world.

We also had a few minutes in the Civil War Sisters Room which highlighted
how the sisters served as nurses and were called "angels of the battlefield" by both Union and Confederate soldiers.

We then went up to visit the Basilica. The church was completed in 1965, so it is a new church by most standards. It was designed to be just a chapel for the Sisters of Charity of St. Joseph. Their order was founded in 1809 and later became known as the Daughters of Charity. All plans were changed when Elizabeth Ann Bayley Seton was beatified on March 17, 1963 by Pope John 23rd in Rome, Italy (which I was fortunate enough to attend as I was living in Rome at the time). They decided to build a larger church to honor Blessed Elizabeth Ann Seton. In 1991, the shrine's chapel was designated as a minor basilica by Pope John Paul II.

The church is large, open, simple, and just beautiful. Make sure you take time to admire the multiple stained-glass windows, the marble and bronze, and the mosaics - especially around the main altar. The many works of art can be attributed to artisans and craftsmen from Italy and Germany.

When Mother Seton was canonized in 1975, she was the first American saint of only three in the Catholic Church’s history. Her remains were moved from the "God’s Little Acre" cemetery to the basilica. There is a special altar on the right side that is called the Altar of Relics. Saint Elizabeth Ann Seton’s remains rest in a small copper casket beneath the altar enclosed in marble. There is a small relic sitting on top of the altar. The statue of Mother Seton has her dressed in the habit that she and the Sisters of Charity wore since 1809. It was sculpted in Italy. Please do take the time to see the entire complex. It is so worth it!

The National Shrine of St Elizabeth Ann Seaton consists of a beautiful Basilica completed in 1965, and the surrounding property that includes the Legacy Garden, St. Josephs Cemetery and two historic houses. If one enters from the parking area, one comes upon a gift show and a museum detailing the life of the Saint from her birth in New York in 1774. Her move to Emmitsburg occurred in 1809, where she established the Sisters of Charity of St Joseph. We were particularly impressed with the display that documents the three miracles that led Elizabeth Ann Seaton to become a Saint. The actual Basilica is the next floor up and is the epitome of light and brightness. The numerous stained-glass windows come in various sizes, including smaller versions in the confessionals. The Saint's remains (or relics) are entombed in the Basilica. Outside the entrance, one finds the first statue of Mother Seaton originally displayed in Washington in 1950 and transferred to this shrine in 1980. Other important statues on the property include one commemorating the 400th birth date of St. Vincent de Paul. We hope to see more of the grounds next time when the weather will be more inviting.

For a non-Catholic interested in women's history, this is an interesting a unique place to visit. I was particularly impressed with the house museums, where very knowledgeable living history guides (including young ones) explained what life was like living at the school in the early 19th Century. Worth a trip!

We took our 6th grade class on a field trip to visit the homes where St. Elizabeth Ann Seton lived and worked. Could not have been more pleased with our tour guides Connie and Savanna. They shared a lot of information and really kept all of the students engaged throughout the tour. They allowed the students to ask questions and were patient as all of them wanted to have the chance to participate in the hands on experiences.
Despite our time constraints both guides did an excellent job providing a wealth of information.

If you or your class/school has any interest in learning more about St. Elizabeth Ann Seton you absolutely should book a tour! I am convinced a lot of my students will be going home asking their parents if they can go back for another visit.

We attended the festivities surrounding Mother Seton's birthday and it was so organized and very youth-friendly. They have so many hands-on activities and the grounds are just so serene and pleasing to the eyes. The inside of the Basilica is well-lit and is bound to bring some tears in your eyes. You know you are entering holy ground and the relic is right there for one to venerate. We bought our rosaries to press upon it. All in all, a very compelling experience.

The Basilica is so beautiful! Being able to learn about this great American Saint and then pray by her tomb was a spiritual experience.

We came here after visiting the nearby Our Lady of Lourdes Shrine. The museum gives a fabulous background on Mother Seton and the work that the Religious Sisters did during the Civil War. The Basilica is beautiful as is the understated tomb of Mother Seton.

Beautiful and solemn church - we went for Sunday services after visiting during the week to view the site. The grounds were also quite peaceful. Ample parking and easy to get to from Gettysburg.
