The Venetian Waterway segment that runs from the Venice train/bus depot to Casperson State Park (beach) is a fun ride.
Careful if the red tide is up and wind is blowing. You may cough during parts of the ride. Otherwise, a lovely trail.

Safer option than riding in bike lanes along city streets. Not the most scenic trail but very well maintained. Grade is fairly flat except when using bridges to cross busy roads. Will return to ride the balance of the trail we did not ride..

We are experienced bikers, and enjoyed the trail. It's well marked, well paved, has good views, and has some amenities along the way to keep you fed and happy. Bridges over all the nasty road crossings.

This bike path is 1st class, smooth, shaded, slick street crossings, bridges over busy multi lane streets. We did a 33 mile ride which included the Venetian canal path and did not reach the end of the Legacy trail. The messes from recent Hurricanes has been moved well off the path. We saw lots of fauna including several Gopher Tortise along the trail.

This is a very nice trail and most is paved. It follows a canal so there's wildlife to be seen and is very scenic.

We have biked on the trail dozens of times and it has always been great! We love doing sections at a time, there are lots of well marked signs and everyone we have encountered has been very nice. A ringer or bell on your bike helps as you pass people or other pass you. We also enjoy stopping at a few of the parks along the route and water overlooks.

The Legacy Rail is a “rails to trails” bicycling, and walking trail that runs from southern Sarasota to Shamrock Park in Venice.
The trail is about 12 miles long and is wide enough to accommodate two way traffic (center markings in place). There are shelters several places along the trail and there are a few parks with facilities adjacent to the trail in Venice. There are a couple of really nice biking bridges that span busy roadways and water ways. There is also access to Oscar Scherer State Park from the trail (pay for access).
There are several free parking lots to park while loading & unloading bicycles. (Get the trail map at Shamrock Park, the Venice Chamber of Commerce or other locations)
The south end of the park is adjacent to the Inter-Coastal Waterway so you can wave to the boats that pass in the water. One bridge was recently built for the trail traffic and one bridge spans a body of water that says it is a manatee area ( we did not see any manatees - darn it).
The south terminus of the trail is in Shamrock Park. A very nice park with facilities that get their own review.
There are some rude riders who do not announce their presence and who ride too fast for a leisure bicycle and pedestrian trail. You find those kind of jerks on every bike trail.
A very nice and pleasant bicycle and walking trail.

This trail is a safe and beautiful paved path for biking and walking. Railroad tracks have been taken out and replaced with the trail. The Legacy part is about 13 miles long and ends in Sarasota. It begins at the historic Venice train station which is now a museum The trail is 4 miles longer when it goes south along the intercoastal waterway, That 4 miles long section has a different name even though it joins the Legacy trail. This part goes downtown and to Shamrock park. So for the avid biker, you can go 17 miles each way. It goes through parks, water ways, over bridges and through neighborhoods. There are many ways to access it other than the Venice historic train station. You can get a map at the Venice Chamber of Commerce downtown Venice or check the internet.

We happen to live close to the trail, and find it handy for short bike rides without the dangers of car traffic. But you can also ride from Shamrock Park and Caspersen Beach at the south end to Culverhouse Nature Park at Palmer Ranch Parkway in Sarasota, a distance of more than 10 miles. Lots of places to take a break, eat a sandwich, or admire the views. There are 11 trail heads, including several parks suitable for picnics, and the old Venice train depot, an attraction in its own right.
Some sections can get crowded in season, so be prepared to share space with walkers and cyclists unfamiliar with trail rules. Open year round, no charge.

You have 2 choices for bike rentals in Venice, FL:
Bicycles International 941.497.4941
Real Bikes of Venice 941.485.3113
Both are great local bike shops for sales, service and rentals. They also lead daily and weekly group rides that would be a great way to ride other parts of the area.
