I didn't do the El Mirador trek with Cooperativa Carmelita because it was more expensive than with Dinastía Kan, the other agency that organizes Mirador treks. And afterwards, I was super happy to have done it with Dinastía Kan for other reasons.
During the 6 days of trek, we learned a lot about the Cooperativa Carmelita (through which all the agencies go) and especially the fact that it has no ethics, whether towards nature, animals or people . In addition, the groups of the Cooperativa Carmelita were much larger than those of Dinastía Kan (around fifteen compared to 4 for my part). In short, boycott Cooperativa Carmelita and contact Antonio de Dinastía Kan, you will not be disappointed!

Trek El Mirador: boycott the Cooperativa Carmelita and go through Dinastía Kan! Excellent staff. We are eternally grateful.
Avoid the Cooperativa Carmelita and therefore all the agencies in Flores (since they go through the Cooperativa) for the Mirador.
The practices of the Cooperativa Carmelita company have negative repercussions on the environment, animals and humans. Contact Dinastía Kan and they will explain. I am not going into detail here because the accusations are so serious that I would risk defamation.
In short, please spread the word, let's boycott Cooperativa and choose Dinastía Kan, a small organization with good values and one that can be trusted with our eyes closed!

I went on this amazing journey with Dynastia Kan and my son, his girlfriend and my brother. You walk up to 15 miles a day through the jungle and mud. All accommodations are very basic but comfortable. The food is great. The ruins and pyramids are a once in a lifetime experience. There was more to see than I had anticipated.

Our guide, Wilber, was informative and fun and a fast walker! Antonio was a great communicator leading up to the trip. He was very responsive and let us add a person last minute. I would say be sure to check on the season and try to avoid rain and extreme heat. Be in good shape and bring blister bandages. The mules carry your bags and all the gear.

I’m 59 and in very good shape and it was a butt kicker, but doable and totally worth it!

Very bad experience. We were prepared to spend 5 days in the jungle. There were only 2 of us and we were happy to have a guide all to ourselves. When we arrived in Carmelita we waited 3 hours before leaving (even though the meeting was at 5 am in Flores so we woke up very early). At 10:45 a.m., a gentleman told us that we were going there (he was our guide). He didn't say hello to us or introduce himself. We started to talk to him but he didn't answer us. We walked 3 hours in the jungle before lunch. The guide was 20 meters in front of us, he didn't wait for us, he didn't ask us if we were okay, he didn't give us any information about the fauna and flora. It was like that all day. Sometimes he let us go in front to smoke a cigarette 20m behind us. We left in mid-October, right in the rainy season. The jungle was flooded, almost impassable with mud and water up to the thigh. When we booked, we were not warned and advised to bring rain gear.
Due to an impassable jungle and an unsuitable guide we asked to turn around on the second day. We did the 17km again in the water. The guide never asked us why we wanted to go back. There were only 3 of us!! No intention, no benevolence, no information about the jungle. The guide didn't do his job at all, it's a scandal to have a guide like him.

The boss simply apologized for our bad experience and we left. We haven't seen what the Mirador looks like, but I don't recommend doing business with this company: COOPERATIVA Carmelita.

I went with two friends on the 5 day hike to El Mirador with ‘Dinastía Kan’ and it was amazing!! It was the perfect combination of nature, animals, culture, history and a fysical challenge. The people from ‘Dinastía Kan’ made the experience unforgettable and everything was perfectly taken care of. The campsites were good, our guide was amazing and very knowledgeable and the food was great!

If you are looking for a unique experience off the beaten track, this will surely fill your needs and offer a rare look into life in the jungle! Amazing Carmelita locals guide you through the history of Mayan civilizations that rose and fell right along the path you walk. From howler and spider monkeys at night, toucans, tiger cranes, coatimundi and oscillated turkeys, and horses carrying your goods, this is a full experience shared by so many moving parts. You get the thrill of an expedition and create lasting friendships with those you share the path with! Treat yourself if you like to hike and don’t mind getting dirty ~ however there are bucket showers awaiting you at each camp! A real delight!

I highly recommend doing this hike with Dinastia Kan! A local family run business with high ethical standards.

My girlfriend and I went on a 5 day hike with Dinastia Kan into the jungle to see the ruins of El Mirador. We had a fantastic tour in great company, both with the other participants and the great team of Dinastia Kan.

We went in a small group of only six participants, our guide Abel, the cook Maria, and Candelario the mule handler. This gave a nice family feel to the tour, and made it easier to tour ruins and jungle at our own pace. This was in stark contrast to the huge groups with seemingly disinterested guides we crossed on our way back.

Our guide Abel is very knowledgeable and told us many details about the flora and fauna of the jungle as well as about the ruins and mayan beliefs and history. He was also very good at answering all our questions despite our very limited spanish. Maria made sure we were all well fed with exceptionally good food and may just be the kindest person I have ever met.

Dinastia Khan offers a service of rare quality, in a way that really respects and values the local history, culture and nature. The team is made of really humble people, with high ethics that really believe and love what they do and take great care of hikers.

We did 5 days hiking with Dinastia Khan Agency. We really enjoyed the experience because the team of Antonio, Havel, Maria and Candelario (and the rest of the team) were really well prepared and accomodating. We felt well taken care of in such a challening experience. For example one of our group could do part of the hike on the mule when they felt sick (because of reasons not related to the hike).

Havel the guide has an inexhaustible knowledge of the various plants and animals in the jungle, and was often pointing us to birds, trees and other unique elements of Peten's landscape, telling stories and anecdotes. He also gave us incredibly fascinating and exaustive explanations about the ancient Mayan civilization through the ruins of El Mirador.
Maria was really lovely in cooking delicious and abundant meals every stop, sharing tips and funny stories accrued through her long experience of El Mirador. She really creates a lovely and familiar environment where people feel well served and at ease.

In summary, the agency really respects the local nature, offers a great service with deep care for the customers, extensive knowledge of the jungle and Mayan history. We loved the experience and 100% reccomend it!

The actual El Mirador trek is with Carmelita, so if you can mentally handle playing 20 questions to get information from a rude man at the office in Flores, then go ahead and book there. I booked across the street at Getaway. The trek is difficult and most nights you have dinner at 8 or 9pm and have to wake up 3:30-5am. So I didn't get enough rest time after eating, and went right to bed. I think this is what made my stomach stop digesting because on the last night, I woke up an hour or so into sleeping, ran out the tent, and my spaghetti came back up entirely intact. I was also half asleep on days 2, 4, and 5 thanks to so little time for sleep.

The animals are abused at Carmelita. They overwork the mules, whip them with the reins and follow them hitting them in the legs with sticks to keep them going. The one guy hitting one in the legs was even laughing while doing so. No positive reinforcement, they are trained with fear of pain until they literally fall over. I saw 3 fall over and get pushed/hit until they stood back up. Our one cook said that they're not fed enough. If you love animals like I do, then this will break your heart.

I loved the nature and the animals we saw along the way, but it was difficult to fully enjoy my time because I needed more sleep and hated seeing the animals abused.
