We had read about this traditional market which takes place in Can Cau every Saturday and made sure that we arrived early to be able to see the various ethnic tribes people arriving from the outlying area to attend. The majority of the women still wear traditional colourful outfits and provide photographers with many opportunities for good shots. Although very busy there are far fewer foreign tourists than at the markets in Bac Ha and Sa Pa. We thoroughly enjoyed the experience

Can Cau Market is situated in Can Cau Commune, Si Ma Cai District, Lao Cai Province. Approximately 100km to the north-east of Lao Cai’s centre, Can Cau Market still be it as it may, not being commercialized or modernized, but it originated from the lifestyle of residents here in hundreds of years before now and then.. This helps maintain its own ethnic character and exclusive perspective, posing such strangely unforgettable feelings and memories to any visitors who come here for their first time.
Traditionally, the fair is organized by the Mong and the Giay people yet operated the same as the Dao people’s business structure. No matter if it’s a holiday or harsh weather condition, Can Cau Market regularly open on every Saturday morning in every week.
Can Cau Market covers an area of more than 1 hectare. It is divided into two particular areas of Can Cau Market: the local product area and the cattle area. All kinds of goods are presented in their most fresh and wholesome condition.

Facilement accessible depuis Bac Ha

Another market well known for colorful minority people and one of a handful where large livestock (cows and buffalo) are still traded. I have been to this market many times as it is easy enough to reach by bus from Bac Ha town center.
Located 12 highway miles (19 km) north of Bac Ha, the small village of Can Cau hosts a smaller version of the Bac Ha market every Saturday morning. Overlooking a beautiful valley blanketed in rice terraces and cornfields, the market is spread out over a fairly large area. Situated along provincial road DT- 153, it feels less crowded, and until recently had fewer tourists than the market in Bac Ha. Since many of the vendors are selling their wares on the highway itself, it is easier to move around and take photographs.
Much like Bac Ha, Can Cau market attracts the colorfully dressed Flower Hmong people who both buy and sell fresh produce, livestock, farming equipment and all sorts of clothing and household goods. In the very back of the market is a long-curved path where vendors sell handicrafts, trinkets, and souvenirs to a growing number of tourists.
The trip from Bac Ha to Can Cau takes about forty minutes, so I recommend getting an early start. The market can be reached by bus or motorcycle taxi; a one-way moto ride costs around 200,000 VND. Another option is to hire a motorcycle taxi and after seeing the market make a tour of the surrounding area. Drivers can be arranged through hotels to do a six to eight-hour sight-seeing tour for around $30 USD.
To reach Can Cau by bus, take any of the local ones marked "Lào Cai - Bắc Hà - Si Ma Cai". These buses pass directly in front of the market which happens to be on the main road between Bac Ha and Si Ma Cai. Since buses make frequent stops, the journey takes at least one hour. The cost, each way, is 40,000 VND.

Long mountainous drive from Sapa , very pretty . Passed through lots of pretty villages all busy , clean , tidy and prosperous . Markets amazing , full of colour and activity . Local women beautiful in there traditional costumes . Water buffalo's changing hands for loads of cash , chickens and piglet's caged up on the back of scooters . Well worth the drive .

For me it’s just like the other common traditional market in asia. The different is you will find many hmong women here with their traditional outfit which is very interesting to see. The rest is just ordinary...food, clothes & goods trader. I went there by motorbike which i rent from a hostel in bac ha plus a driver and it took about an hour from the city centre. Better go there in the early morning so it will not to crowded with the tourist...

This is one of the most colourful markets I have ever visited. The women are dressed in traditional clothing which in February is brand new and clean! They sell everything from seeds, tools, fabrics, clothing, and medicines to live water buffalo. Located close to the Chinese border, this market brings Chinese buyers who cherish Vietnamese water buffalo. The market is an amzing experience, not to be missed!

There's nothing like true markets in SE Asia.
Not the city ones that are really just for souvenirs, but the ones with the livestock and local foods.
Can Cau is one of the classic local ones and it sits in amongst rice terraces so you get the views as well.
Bustling with people and full of goods to buy. Yes, some souvenirs, but you really have to expect that in Vietnam.

Posto fantastico.

How long from Sapa or Bac Ha did it take to get to the Can Cau markets? Did you also go to the Bac Ha Friday night and / or sunday markets?
What else is there to see besides markets at Sapa and Bac Ha?
Thanks for your help.

It took about 2.5 hours from the Topas Ecolodge so am guessing about 3 hours all up. Haven’t been to Bac Ha markets but drive through the town about 20 minutes before Can Cau

You can choose to go along with a tourist bus, but then you arrive at the market rather late. The real charm of the market is very early, around 07am. Therefore I would advice you to rent a scooter and just drive there yourself early in the morning. Trust me, around 09:00 the market will be flooded with tourists and the vibe will change!

We have a choice of visiting Can Cau market or Lung Khau Nhim market. Given that choice, which would you choose?

I would still choose Can Cau market. It's a very authentic scene - beautiful surroundings, great for photography. Looking down the 'valley' from the market, we could see a livestock market. It's also a place where the young "eligibles" (from age 14) go to find/meet potential life partners. There are subtle signs of modern influence. I think it'll lose its authenticity and tribal charm, probably in the next few years, when the paved roads are ready and when there'll be more tourists than locals....Sapa is already swamped with tourists on weekends since the highway from Hanoi opened a few months ago, which cut commute time from 10 hours on the train to 3-4 hours by car.
Disclaimer: I have not been to Lung Khau Nhin market so my recommendation is based on what I've read on the internet about this market vs Can Cau market which I've visited.
