Enjoy the 10-15 minute drive north from Haines, past the Chilkoot River (lots of fishing and seals in the river), and past beautiful wildflower meadows to the state rec. area. Plenty of wildlife viewing opportunities, including bears, bald eagles, fish, and birds. Beautiful Alaskan mountain views. Campground is in very nice condition. Not too busy on a summer afternoon. Enjoy the scenery and the peacefulness of nature.

Did a kayaking excursion on the lake - water was like glass and our group was the only one on the lake! Sun was shining, weather was amazing! Many eagles and waterfalls to enjoy while strolling around the lake. Unbelievable views that didn't end once you hit some of the trails! Easy hiking with many board-walks!

Drove out to the park in the hopes of seeing bear but none to be seen. The park is well kept and truly worth the drive.

We were in Haines for only a day as a wonderful stop on our cruise. As luck would have it, a mud slide cancelled our planned excursion. So we didn't have a plan, but at our first stop in the first art gallery we saw we got to talking with the owner, and she suggested we rent a car and take a drive to see this area and look for bears, etc.

So we took her advice and walked up the block, secured a rental car with a cracked windshield and a "change oil" light and tried to follow the verbal directions the rental car woman gave us. At first we ended up on two different "road closed" roads before finding the right one that took us up to Chilkoot Lake.

The drive itself is beautiful -- the Lukat Inlet is picturesque in and of itself and we even pulled over at least once to take in that view. But then you get to a rushing river studded with all kinds of rocks (and guys fishing in the river, too). The movement of the water lightened its color to a creamy light green. Stunning.

Then we continued on up to the lake and saw a variety of camp set-ups. cyclists and more crazy pretty views.

We weren't lucky enough to see any bears, even though we were carefully watching, but we also weren't disappointed to have done the drive.

We drove to this area with no expectations, other than to see some of the beautiful Haines scenery. And we were enchanted at every turn, for sure. it's a postcard come to life.
But then, as we drove down the narrow road to the lake, snaking between a mountain on one side and a stream tumbling over rocks on the other, we suddenly noticed a brown bear wading through the water. In awe, we watched as he ignored us and scouted out the best place to nab a passing salmon. He'd lumber about, wait, pounce and splash, sit up on his bum with his prize and take a few bites, then repeat the process.
Bear sightings, we learned from locals gathered there with long camera lenses to capture shots of activity just like this, are common here. After this bear ambled back into the woods, we visited the lake for a bit, then returned down the road on the way out and had the privilege of watching another bear feeding. It's truly a joy to watch bears doing their thing. But here are a few tips: If you park on the side of the road, be sure you do it in a place that allows you to FULLY pull off the road. If your vehicle is in the road at all, you WILL get a ticket and a long scolding. It didn't happen to us, but we saw it happen to others. Kind of takes the shine off the joy of watching the bears. Also, if you get out to watch, be sure you stay close enough to your vehicle to get back in quickly -- at least faster than the bear could move on his way toward you. And they're faster than you think, even if they really aren't interested in confronting humans. One more thing -- watch where you put your feet. Yes, bears mostly leave their mark in the woods. But they also do so on the roadway, on walking paths and wherever they like. The piles are large and plentiful. Hit one just right, and you'll sink to the ankle.

This gorgeous lake has many things to do - kayaking, fishing, eagle watching, bear watching. There is also a salmon weir where someone's job is to sit at the weir and count each salmon as it goes through. There is a whiteboard by the entrance to explain how many salmon have gone through the weir in recent days. This lake is so gorgeous and peaceful - we spent a lot of time just sitting and relaxing. Saw loads of eagles and even a bear!

Breathtaking lake surrounded by glaciers. The kayak guide said that professional skier would stay here in the winter for months and took helicopter to ski from the top of the mountain!
