Me and my husband enjoy hiking these trails. Quiet and peaceful is what we like. Some of these mountains are the oldest on the East Coast .

Many miles of trails available for hiking with some camping available also. Trails are well marked, wide and easy to follow, with minimal elevation changes. View them in All Trails before you go.

My husband and I have had numerous opportunities to participate in Asheboro's A3 hikes; many of these are in the beautiful Birkhead Mountain Wilderness at the northern end of the Uwharrie Mountains and part of the Uwharrie National Forest. This area is truly a hidden jewel in the Asheboro area, only 10 - 20 minutes from downtown Asheboro! Our hike leader is usually Jim Rich. Jim has steeped himself in information about local hiking opportunities that are fun, interesting and usually moderately easy hikes of about two hours. These hikes are free, open to the public and lots of fun. This area has lots of local history, including a number of goldmines! It is wonderful to have such a special outdoor area to explore while getting fresh air and exercise!

a little hard to find, but a great place to hike they have maps of the trail in a little box at the trail head and the trail is marked with paint on the trees the hike is relatively easy and a good length. keep your eyes open, as bigfoot might be around.

This is a great place to take a hike. We took our dog and the trails were well marked and used, but we didn't run across a lot of people....perfect! We really enjoyed the experience.

One of Randolph County's best secrets is the Birkhead Mountain National Wilderness Area. I hike in wilderness, with my family and/or dog, numerous times each month (except during hunting season). The trails are easy to follow and provide peace and beauty in every season.

With five trailheads allowing access to the trail network, there are always new adventures awaiting. The least used entrance is off Streiby Church road in the south. Hard to find the trailhead, but a peaceful portion of the trail. The newest entrance, off High Pines Church Road, is my favorite due to its seclusion and limited use.

We have hiked the area for an hour, all day, and overnight camping trips and have always enjoyed our visits.

This is a really great place to go hiking. The trails are not too difficult and there are several to try. It's always nice, but if you go during the week you won't usually find many people. It's nice to be there in the middle of nowhere and listen to the birds, and see other animals.

This is a really fun hiking location. There is a really good loop that took me about 3.5 hrs with my dog.
The trail meanders across streams and up to hill tops over looking valleys in the distance. The trail was very well marked with white marks on trees. However if you plan to hike the loop for the first time I would take a map. Even a simple map would be helpful. There are a few off shoot trails that could lead you off the loop if you didn't take a map. Also I went in Nov and when I got to the parking lot there were tons of hunters. I almost left but I decided to hike the trail and only ran into only one hunter on the trail entire time. However, during hunting season I wouldn't dare wander off the trail near the parking lots.
There are two trail heads off Lassiter Mill road. If you drive in from 49 south and exit off science hill road then left onto Lassiter a few miles down you will hit the Thornburg trail head on the left. If you pass this trailhead and if you keep going on Lassiter Mill road you will see a sign a few more miles down the road for Robbins Branch trail. Turn left on the dirt road for a few miles and you will see a parking area. This is the trail head and from this parking lot it took me 3.5 hrs. I think if you hike from the Thornburg trailhead it is much longer. Also Lassiter Mill road on Nov 22 2016 had road closed signs to local traffic only but I was able to get to both trail heads by staying on Lassiter. Also there were signs that no wood fires were allowed in the forest as of Nov 2016.

It was a super nice hike and well worth the drive from central NC.
