Wonderful experience in the heart of Kinshasa. If you are looking for Congo handicrafts, new and old from all corners of the county, then this is the place. We came with our young children and never had a problem with thievery. Please understand that the vendors are local and their style of selling is more forthright. This can be tiresome, but if you are patient you can get good deals. Negotiation is the key here. After getting a low price we tend to tip a little.

Dont be fooled. There is a reason why this is called Market of the Thieves. And the name doesnt refer the the pick pockets that you might encounter there. The Congolese are creative and arty people and they make nice little bronze statues, copper pressed murals and wooden carved figures and animals. (Just remember, that wooden article will surely show several cracks in 12 months time)

But at this market they sell mostly rubbish at highly, highly inflated prizes. They firmly believe that they can bull.... most foreign visitors by telling you a story that you are, for instance, buying a rare note. At other markets you haggle about a better price for a decent item. At this market they want to sell you a piece of trash at a ridiculous price. Every market has its own strengths, challenges, style of pressure or intimidation. I accept that. What hurts is that at this market they think you are stupid.

Dont bother unless you want a malachite ashtray or a voodoo mask that probably comes from West Africa. Everything considered, this market is hardly worth a visit. Not be be compared with flea markets such as the Grand Bazaar, Izmailovsky, Khan El Khalili or Camden.

Its a really good place to buy authentic Congolese stuff. From masks to art objects to malachite jewelry. Direct to the artisans and locals. Just be prepared to bring your A game in haggling. Not too much though. It kinda nice to help out the locals also. Dont forget to pop a cold one after.

The Value Market is known as "Marché des Valeurs" in French, but also as "Marché des Voleurs" (Market of Thieves). Why? Because the shopkeepers exaggerate the prices. They can sell you an item they got for 5 dollars at 100 or even 200 USD. They are also far too pushy. They all call you at the same time or follow you down the alleys. That can be really annoying. However, there are treasures here you won't find anywhere else. I have found this red banknote (see photo). It is extremely rare. Where else could I have found it?

Bon amusement !
