As quiet often in Kinshasa, finding the place asks a few efforts but once you are there you won't regret.
This place has something unusual. Mixing Congolese history with contemporary art is allready special but bringing this jointly wth a lot of diverse activities, as there are educational lessons on ecology for schools, a sunday-brunch, each month a temporary exhibition putting one local artist in the picture, makes this place unique.
On top of it, this all is for free and if you want a drink the prices are democratic.
Don't forget before leaving to have a look in the small shop whose assortment is as diverse as the place.

Les peintures de Kalala sont vraiment ahurissantes. Quel talent !

One of my best discoveries in Kinshasa in less than 2 weeks but the space needs better management, better communications, more activities.

There are many things happening at Texaf Bilembo. Yesterday, on Saturday 3rd March 2018, for example, there was the first meditation class ever in Kinshasa. Kinshasa already knew yoga, with weekly classes at the Cercle français and here, on Saturday morning, but Kinshasa had never heard of any meditation classes before. This was the very first!

Several people came and were delighted to participate. The meditation classes will now happen every Saturday from 17:00 to 18:15, at the first floor. One meditation class costs $10 and 10 meditation classes cost $80. There are two levels of practice. To pass level 1, a person should do the 10 basic classes twice and choose one of the ten taught techniques and work upon it for a certain period of time.

At the level 2, people gather only to practice their own chosen technique with others, to refresh their knowledge of meditation, to hear new spiritual stories and to ask questions. The ten techniques that are practiced at the level 1 are: meditation on Om (aloud), meditation on a Sanskrit mantra (silent), meditation on a long Sanskrit mantra (chanted), meditation on a non-Sanskrit mantra (silent), mindfulness of breathing, mindfulness of breathing in front of a wall (zen style), body scan (Vipassana style), tonglen, chakra visualization and ishta-devata visualization.

Bilembo is a lively art gallery created by Chantal Tombu and her partner, the writer and photographer Alain Huart, in a building that was formerly a textile factory (Texaf). Bilembo has a small permanent exhibition, on the cultural heritage of the DRC, especially masks, and on the natural ressources of the country, including the ecological challenges it will have to face in a few years. There is also a café, a restaurant and a small library. The restaurant is only open for a brunch on the first Sunday of each month (please contact the management to make sure). The library sells about 100 different books on Congo, postcards and some souvenirs. Yoga classes are held at the first floor of Bilembo several times a week. But the most interesting of all are undoubtedly the temporary exhibitions: every month, Chantal Tombu, who is an archeologist and a museologist, invites a Congolese artist, either a painter, a sculptor or a photographer, to exhibit his works in the gallery. It is unique in Kinshasa and most of the time a fabulous experience for the public who gets to know a talented Congolese artist as well as for the artist himself, since he can not only get to be known by a wider audience, but also gets a golden opportunity to sell his sculptures or his paintings. In other words, if you like art, this is a place you shouldn't miss while in Kinshasa.
