My wife and I flew over sections of the Yukon River on our excursion with Northern Alaska Tour Company during our escorted ‘Natural Wonders of Alaska’ tour with Titan Travel. We were based for 3 nights on a room only basis at the welcoming and comfortable Bridgewater Hotel, Fairbanks, located on the banks of the Chena River. This optional evening excursion took us from Fairbanks over the Brooks Range and the Yukon River (as well as over the Arctic Circle!) to Coldfoot and then by road along the Dalton Highway to the small village of Wiseman. I'd seen photographs of the impressive Yukon River prior to my excursion but even so the views I had of this majestic river from our Air Arctic 8 seater aircraft were breathtaking. Our knowledgeable pilot and guide on our flight explained through our headphones that this is the longest river in Alaska flowing for nearly 2,000 miles from British Columbia, Canada across Alaska to the Bering Sea. Despite its length, there are very few vehicle-carrying bridges across the river, one being the E. L. Patton Bridge carrying the Dalton Highway over the river north of Fairbanks. Our pilot drew our attention towards that bridge which I could see in the distance but we were too far away to appreciate it properly. He also explained that the Yukon was one of the main means of transportation during the Klondike Gold Rush at the turn of the 20th century and the name Yukon refers to 'white water river' and reflects the effects of glacial silt in the river. I took numerous photographs of the river, it's many tributaries and lakes and even though they are from quite a distance, they capture the size of this mighty river. It was wonderful flying over and seeing the Yukon River and this excursion enabled me to visit places I would not have seen nor experienced otherwise during my tour of Alaska.

This river is huge! The bridge over the river is, to me, breath-taking. (I hate high bridges. LOL) We stopped at the visitor information cabin on the east side of the north shore. The host couple were friendly and interesting. There are a few gifts available for purchase, as well as some very useful information. Since the bugs weren't too bad we ate a picnic supper at one of the tables by the shore. While some of the Dalton Highway was rough, a lot of it is paved. Our small rental SUV had no problem at all. Since we were there on a Sunday the large truck traffic wasn't too bad. There are lots of places to take photos and the views along the way are just AWESOME! There is fuel available on the other side of the highway but be prepared to pay $$$ for it. There is also a nice restaurant with rooms available there too. The trip from Fairbanks to the Yukon takes about 3 hours one way. Allow plenty of time since you may encounter road construction or heavy truck traffic. And remember, this is remote. Out house facilities only.
