It's a little difficult to rate a dilapidated piazza that is still in shambles from being bombed in WWII. I give it 5 stars because it is such a historic reminder of the atrocities of war that we rarely get to see in the 21st century. It takes just a few moments to get to off the main street, Via Vittorio Emanuele, near the Vucciria market and all the lively bars and restaurants. The fountain is still standing among the ruins of palazzos that once belonged to nobility. It felt like standing still in a monumental moment of history. Street artists have adorned many of the walls with drawings and graffiti. It will just take a few minutes of your day, and is well worth it.

This piazza is in the historic centre of Palermo and yet it is a strange and sad place. Palermo was heavily bombed during WWII. Over 2000 people were killed, 100+ historic buildings and churches were damaged or destroyed and this piazza took many hits. Although WWII ended 75 years ago, this part of the city still has all the old scars. Walking through the piazza, is not unlike walking through a scene of London during the Blitz. It was eerie and desolate when we were there. However amidst the dilapidated and bombed out site, colourful and striking street art has sprung up.
The most striking artwork is a large skeletal saint on a brilliant golden background, 'Santa Morte' by Igor Scalisi Palminteri, a local Palermo artist who has painted similar even bigger works. In 2018 he painted the work as a gift to the city. The gilded background captures your eye immediately. At first glance it looks just like traditional Byzantine iconography but it’s a ghoulish version with a skeleton saint. It was partially defaced just after it was done and the face was spray-painted but it is very powerful and striking work nonetheless.
The ruins that you see here were once palazzos belonging to the nobility (Palazzo Lo Mazzarino, Palazzo Monti, 16th century Palazzo Rammacca and Palazzo Sperlinga). The small central fountain is from 1591. The fountain’s water was traditionally regarded as a cure for many diseases and came from all the neighbourhoods to get water from here. I was curious about the palazzos but there is little information to be found anywhere.
Palazzo Lo Mazzarino is the most well known because the Austrian artist Uwe Jäntsch set up camp on one floor of the mostly derelict building. He lived and worked there for many years, creating provocative art installations. The over-sized painted sign “Uwe ti ama” (Uwe loves you), is plastered across the top of the building and can still be seen.
Around the corner is a colourful, modern version of the ancient pagan symbol, the Genius of Palermo. It caught our eye because we’d seen statues of the Genius around Palermo. The central features are always the same - an old man’s head with a crown and long beard, a young man’s body and a snake biting his chest. There are competing versions of what this all means and much of the story has been lost over time but this one had a modern, fun twist. The snake morphs into a guitar and he is sending a text message with another hand.
Several of the ruined palazzos were bought for €10 million by a group a while ago. The intention was to redevelop and revitalise the area but ongoing resistance and tension between different powerful groups has meant that so far nothing much has come of it. Who knows what the future holds for this piazza.

Another amazing area in Palermo - just beauty. Difficult to walk more than 10 metres without seeing something of beauty.

Definitely worth a visit to find out more about the artistic counter culture of the city. An almost derelict space that has been taken over by street artists. The Austrian born artist Uwe, in particular who lives and works in the old bank on the eastern side of the square has been a driving force. It's worth seeing if he is giving a mini tour of his studio. I had a chat with him and went inside this incredible old building. This gave me a much better insight into the workings of the city.
