I can't answer with certainty, but my guess would be that there is a short break between masses to allow people from the first mass to leave and people to come into the next mass, Regardless, I have come in to mass at many churches and either sat down or stood in the back or on the side. Amost all tourists do. Just try not to be disruptive. I usually just sit and look from there and enjoy the overall experience. I can tell you that this church, unlike most, has a large crowd of people who actually come to pray, even outnumbering the tourists, who are numerous, as well. The two times I went the church was either full or almost full. At any rate, they all co-exist peacefully amd it is a wonderful experience. It is a lovely and spirtual place, whether you are Catholic or not. You should not miss it, if it fits into your schedule.

We arrived in Trastevere on a Sunday in October and walked in just after 11:00 during mass. We set down and attended mass for about 15 minutes and then returned after lunch for pictures. We also visited during the day on Monday and Tuesday.

Haven't attended a holy mass but according to Lonely Planet you can attend services at Santa Maria in Trastevere Monday to Saturday at 9am and 5:30pm (plus Vepser at 8:30pm Mon-Fri and at 8pm Sat); Sundays at 8:30am, 10:30am, 11:30am, 5:30pm, and 6:45pm.

Yes, the church is fairly open with a wide rear aisle and benches instead of chairs. There may be a threshold at the door you'll have to navigate but there are no chairs.

Hallo With some help from my Italian colleague I can inform you that masses are held at 9 am and 5.30 pm on weekdays. On Saturdays there's an additional at 8 pm. On Sundays the masses are held at 8.30 am, 10 am, 11.30 am, 5.30 pm and 18.45 am (the two latter on Sunday are held according to the Byzantine protocol).
