A área
Endereço
Bairro: St. James

Whilst many of us are still waiting for that elusive timed ticket for a future visit to one of our great London institutions there’s art a plenty on exhibition now at most of London’s Mayfair and St. James’s auction houses. Christie’s in King Street is particularly impressive at the moment with exhibitions in virtually all of its spaces. Upstairs in the grandest rooms 18th and 19th century furniture, clocks and sculptures none more striking than a long row of gold animal heads. Downstairs left mainly British prints and paintings on sale for the Maggie Coles cancer trust. But everywhere else a preview of a vast upcoming online auction called ‘dialogues across the centuries’ featuring European art from the Renaissance to modern day. My favourite room featured mainly British art with huge floor to ceiling works by Joe Tilson and Alan Jones one by the latter occupying an entire end wall.

The previews at Christie's are always fascinating to visit, with its variety of different spaces enabling it to fill everywhere for a major large scale auction, or to have several different previews and exhibitions on at one time, which is often the case. The quality of the art on show is often of such quality that it puts our national collections in the shade.

I was fortunate to visit in the week before the doors closed because of the coronavirus situation, to view what was probably the last of the physical auctions for a while, where, with modern Prints and Multiples downstairs and around the main staircase, the grander rooms at Christie's were filled to overflowing with six private collections in the UK and Europe, curated by David Hicks, Maison Jansen and Colefax & Fowler. I mourned the loss of Christie's in South Kensington, but time has shown that is made the right decision to close it and concentrate on the main auction house in Mayfair and the use of interior designers is a fascinating way to see how the different art and antiques could be brought together.

For me, the most interesting room was from the collection of the late Lord and Lady John Cholmondley where modern work by artists such as Damien Hirst, Paul Huxley and Peter Struychen is interspersed alongside the antiques.

Their auction of Prints & Multiples had strong representation by Andy Warhol, Roy Lichtenstein, Francis Bacon, Pablo Picasso and other masters of 20th and 21st century art, plus, in particular, a good selection of prints by David Hockney.

I look forward to being able to revisit once the current situation allows auctions to resume.

Very interesting place to see old, antique stuff which were brought to this place to sell in order to covert them to hard currencies for the owner.

Christie’s in King Street, just parallel to Piccadilly and South of the Royal Academy and Fortnum and Masons. The preview sale viewings are truly outstanding and the presentations are very good. You can just browse around any time and pretend you’ve got lots of money! The staff are very welcoming. The previews only last for a few days before the auctions so try to pick the best time to go - check online. Lovely atmosphere for any one who likes art and it’s all free to view.

Christie’s is an auction house founded in London in 1766 and has been in its current premises in King Street St. James’s since 1823. It used to have a second London presence in South Kensington but disposed of this in 2017 to concentrate more on online sales. The St. James’s premises are, arguably, the most impressive of those of all the London auction houses. And the exhibitions for the various auctions coinciding with Frieze week were the most impressive of any I saw in the London auction houses this afternoon. The main Post-War and Contemporary auctions have some stunning work by the likes of Basquiat, De Stael, Lichtenstein and Warhol. The separate auction of works from the collection of Midlands entrepreneur Jeremy Lancaster has an entire room of Howard Hodgkin paintings including one very early uncharacteristic one. In addition there are several upstairs rooms devoted to modern Italian works including an impressive de Chirico.

This was mine and Mrs.Electric's first ever visit to Christie's. David Gilmour has decided to sell ( most of ) his guitars for charity. And they were displayed here with thought, kindness, professionalism and love. We were treated wonderfully from the minute we walked up to the door to the moment we left. Usually i am a miserable devil. I brought myself up on Pink Floyd ,The Cure and Radiohead, so don't expect me to be happy...haha). But today I was very happy indeed. Mrs.Electric had booked the viewing for me as she knows how much respect I have for David Gilmour( Both for his music and his politics which influenced me greatly). She also knows that, post stroke, I have the organizational skills of a slab of wet concrete...haha.So she took it upon herself to make the booking. I felt the love.
And Christie's did David Gilmour proud. Not only were the guitars beautifully displayed, but there was no glass either so the essence and the smells permeated into the atmosphere. You were not allowed to touch of course. But you could get right up close and take photos of these things of beauty. And you could almost FEEL the man present. No surprises really , as Christie's had also adorned the place with photos, posters, and excellent live footage coupled with a superb sound system.
I want to thank the following people for making the day so special. The lady who was outside and ushering people in at their allotted time. Thank you for not laughing at my attempts at speaking Russian, and for letting us in a little bit early. Thanks to Scott who was dishing out complimentary tea and coffee. Any thing free, and we are on first name terms immediately Buddy.Ha ha. Thanks to the two ladies on the stall who sold me a bag for £15 . Both had better hair than me...sniff :))). A huge thank you to Paul from security for such a warm and wonderful conversation. I could quite happily have a drink with the man. Thank you also to the delightful lady who had produced the online lot number list and spent so much time with me while she double checked and confirmed that the Bill Lewis guitar was NOT listed for auction. Finally, thank you to the adorable French lady at the bottom of the stairs.
This was a very personal visit for me. I had a stroke in Thailand in 2012 ( what a clever man...haha) and it was Pink Floyd music and David's music ( along with some Black Sabbath ) that i listened to for hours while trying to force my left hand back to life. So to be in the same room as all these magical things. It was a truly magical experience. And of course everyone who visited ...we were all there for the same reasons. The love of music, the love of the 'Floyd, and the love of a man who is doing all this for charity. What a perfect day. Thank you .
P,S. And the Bill Lewis ? Well, here is a tale. I was a teenager in the seventies and being the proud owner of a black Fender Strat with maple neck ( It got stolen :((( ) i decided that i would learn the lead solos to money. I wore out 7 copies of TDSOTM...and could NOT hit those top notes in the second solo section. It drove me POTTY....lol. Of course the years go by and I finally learned that the solo was played on the Bill Lewis guitar from Canada which had 24 frets!!!! When I came face to face with it at the Pink Floyd V and A exhibition, all of my emotions came to the fore. I simply glared at it and said 'Oh, you CLUCKING bastard'. :)))) .I got some very strange looks. Can I afford any of the auction items? Nooooo. But I have my £15 bag. And I have come away wanting to pick up a guitar again. Wow.
