Fantastic trip!!!
If you re looking for a whale watching trip to Baja Calif.Sur, where the “friendly”gray whales migrate, to mate and give birth, look no further than Pure Baja Travels! I’ve been to 2 of the three lagoons with 3 different companies, PBT is the best, by far ❗️❗️
Here are just some of the reasons:Environmentally sensitive to the whales, the lagoon and the local community; delicious food, beautiful sunsets at happy hour, comfortable glamping tent camping, knowledgable and fun guides, and ethical business practices. They make it pretty easy to get to a wonderfully peaceful and remote area that allows you to reconnect with nature’s beauty❣️Don’t Miss this adventure with Pure Baja Travels. It may be life changing. It has been for me.
Fun, laughter, educational, unique. Just go❗️

Fantastic place in the middle of the desert. Gray whales stop in the lagoon and sometimes come up to the boat to be cuddled (we made 2 trips and saw at least fifteen whales). The environment is incredible, the people (all young biologists) are the quintessence of friendliness and friendliness. It's also excellent food. During the whale season (December-April) it is cold, especially in the evening. The tented camp, very clean and tidy, takes you back to youth camps (for those who have done them)

This unique place is known for the friendliest whales that come to your boat for interactions (petting, kissing etc.,) instead of traditional whale watching, which is done from a distance in the rest of the world. February and March are the best months to visit the lagoon.
The cheapest method is to fly to Loreto (LTO) airport, rent a car and drive to San Ignacio town (3.30 hours) for cheap accommodations. Then you can drive for 40 minutes to the San Ignacio lagoon and pay $70 per person for whale watching (we went 3 days consecutively for 11am boat tours).
We used Antonio's tours and the staff members were great. You can order a delicious seafood lunch for $12 to enjoy after the boat tour.
- For the two of us, our total cost for the 4-night trip was ($1200 for airfare + $400 for stay + $250 for rental car + $100 gas + $200 for food + $500 for boat rides) around $2650 USD.
The next best method is to stay at the lagoon for $300 per person ($600 for 2) nightly price for an all-inclusive stay (meals + evening cocktails) with two free tours (8AM & 2PM) per day.
- For two people, the 4-night lagoon stay will cost ($1200 for airfare + $2400 for stay + $250 for rental car + $50 gas) around $3900 and a 3-night stay will be $3300. If you stay only 3 nights, you may not get to do any boat rides on the first day due to the long drive from the Loreto airport (4.5 hours).
I recommend making 3-4 boat tours to make the most of the trip since whales may not come to your boat every time (we were lucky to pet them two out of three trips).
It is very safe to drive in Baja region and roads are paved with little traffic (last 10 miles to the lagoon is dirt/gravel road, but you can manage with regular rental car without the need for a 4X4).
Google Maps is not updated on the lagoon dirt road and I recommend NOT following them for the last 2 miles (stay on the main road and follow road signs for Kuyima and Antonio's Ecotours).

We visited the Laguna San Ignacio via The Royal Polaris sportfishing boat trip set up by the Cabrillo Marine Aquarium in San Pedro, CA. We were onboard The Royal Polaris for 8 days, three of which we spent anchored in the Laguna. Twice a day we transferred from the anchored The Royal Polaris into pangas (small, open boats w/ outboard motor) to go into the laguna to interact with whales. We did NOT chase the whales, we just went to their general vicinity. Mother grey whales, with their calf, approached our panga on their own. We even were able to touch both mother and calf grey whales. The laguna is very large and I only saw four pangas maximum at a time. Around us was a near continuous show of blows, spy-hopping. Only a few breaches as the laguna is shallow. Incredible experience.

What a wonderful place to visit. Maldo Lorna Rodrico Packo Roberto and all the other hosts were wonderful. We saw whales twice a day. Our sleeping cabins were super comfortable. The toilets and showers clean. The food and drink made fresh everyday was great! Date coffee. Yum! A must add to your bucket list. And don’t miss the salt lake and oyster factory too!

This is a guide for those who aren’t whale enthusiasts but who’re interested in interacting with the grey whales up close. The lagoon is one of three places in Baja Mexico where one can actually interact (pet) grey whales in the wild along with Magdalena Bay and Scammon’s lagoon. The season is from mid January to mid April so mid February is probably the peak time for the number of whales. However San Ignacio lagoon is where the interactions are strictly regulated and because of it’s isolation the fewest tourists per whale. It is a moot point whether these whales choose to interact with people or whether they merely approach the little boats (pangas) out of curiosity and rub their backs against them allowing the people in the boat to stroke them. Nevertheless the interactions are a minority of the outings (1 in 3 to 1 in 4 boat trips) with the whales choosing to interact and not the reverse. In other words whilst you usually see whales at every outing don’t expect an interaction every time so plan at least 4-6 trips to guarantee an interaction. The boat trips are limited to 90 minutes in the whale area and to a maximum of two pangas to a whale at any time. The whale zone is at the mouth of the lagoon beyond an imaginary line beyond Punta Piedra (Rocky Point) so don’t expect to see them from the shore unless you stay at Punta Piedra camp (Baja Discovery). There are 5 operators in total Baja Discovery, Baja Adventures (Campo Ramon), Baja Ecotours (Campo Cortez), Ecotourismo Kuyima, Antonio’s Ecotours and Pachico’s Ecotours (from nearest to furtherest away from the whale watching area with added transportation time in the pangas). They offer a variety of basic accommodation (basic tents and cabanas) with solar power and eco friendly sanitation so don’t expect glamping. The food is delicious and caters for vegetarians. After dark (7.15pm) it’s a short talk and then it’s bedtime without cellphone signal or internet. There are 2 outings a day (morning and afternoon). Nights are cold and mornings can be too on the pangas so layer up. The prices vary between operators and trips so do your research well. Tipping is expected at US $20-25 per day per person. This isn’t a cheap trip! They can include transportation to the lagoon (5 hours drive or a short charter flight from Loreto which has a regular direct flight from LA). If you love whales and wish to interact with them responsibly in a place that is unspoilt by civilisation then this is the place for you provided you can fund it.

Hi Max:
Planning to go see whales at Baja's San Ignacio Lagoon in March 2020. But need to do it as inexpensively as possible. Taking bus to the town of San Ignacio and staying in motel there. I read that Antonio's Tours has a office in town, Do they offer daily whale tours (and
transportation to the lagoon from town? Thanks, Joe

I'd like to maximize my time in San Ignacio Lagoon with the whales. I have been there before and want to find out how to arrange for the longest possible time with the whales. Any suggestions?

What was the name of the company that you worked with? Would this experience be a day tour or does it need to be extended to multiple days?

Hi Sally,
I just got back from Baja, California and fell in love with it. I have a few questions cause we definitely want to go back and see the hump back whales. Wondering where you stayed? Did you get a guide? My cousin is a bird lover so would be interested in the additional bird watching tours too. Also, did you fly into San Diego and rent a car in Tijuana or how did you get around? We rented a car while we were there

Hello - my wife an di would like to visit San Ignacio but are unsure of a few items
1 how long is the drive from San Diego and are the roads ok. We think it may be a two day drive if so any ideas where we should stop mid way?
2 Can you stay in San Ignacio and charter a tour to see the whales or do you have to stay at one of the camps at the Lagoon.
3 Suggestions on which tour to useI have seen a few
4 is Guerrero Negro an alternative to San Ignacio
5 How many days should we spend whale watching ie.. will we see whales on the first day or have to make a few trips out?
Thank you in advance for any help you can offer.

I have just started looking into this adventure, so forgive my lack of knowledge. What time of year is the best time to go??
Escrita a 19 de janeiro de 2018
The Mums have their babies around January in the inner lagoon when the males are also there ready to mate again. Perhaps not of the best time to visit as the Mums are very protective of their new born calves.
The males leave the lagoon a month or so later. Now the Mums are no longer pestered by the males they concentrate on raising their babies and also move a little farther out into the lagoon. I think that as the Mums went through seeing small boats with humans excitedly splashing them when they were only little (18 ft long) they know that it is safe to let their offspring approach for a fuss. They sometimes join in. March to April they are usually in the area towards the mouth of the lagoon, both adults and youngsters are at ease with their human fans and it’s not long before they are approaching the boats.
Of course the further out they are, the longer trip out to see them.
When I was there, early April, the temperature was a comfortable 80s ish most of the time.
The sunsets are beautiful.
