Accessed by a footpath that joins the South West Coast Path and is clearly viewable from the path. I decided to make a stop here on Day 10 of my walk.

The Church's History is closely linked to the past Vicar, the Reverend Robert Stephen Hawker (1803 - 1875), who is credited as the Writer of Cornwall's National Anthem “Trelawny”. Hawker is also credited with burying in the Churchyard many drowned Sailors that were washed up at the Bottom of Vicarage Cliff. One of the Memorials in the Churchyard is the White Figurehead of the "Caledonia", whose Captain and Crew lie buried here.
The Church has a number of Features of Interest such as the Pew Ends which are carved with Gothic Tracery, a Norman Font roughly shaped with ropework decoration, a Pulpit which incorporates woodwork as blind tracery, a Chancel Screen which incorporates 16th. and 17th. Century carvings, Fragments of Mural Painting dating to the late 15th. and 16th. Century on the North Wall and in the South Aisle the Hawker Memorial Window depicting Reverend Hawker and his dog and various other features associated with him.
There is a good view of the Morwenstow Vicarage from the bottom of the Churchyard, which was the Home of the Reverend R.S. Hawker. It has unique Chimneys modelled on Church Towers having a Special Meaning for him insofar that they represent the Church Towers of Churches where he had served as a Vicar before coming to Morwenstow. The Old Kitchen Chimney is a Replica of Hawker's Mother's Tomb.

This isn't a tourist attraction . Please read up about Hawker and the church of St Morwenna.

You don't have to be religious...this place has a tremendous 'vibe'. I really had the feeling that you're in a place which 'feels' over 1000 years old (the Font is Saxon).

Visit it on a stormy day if possible. When we visited the wind was rattling the huge door which opens out onto the Atlantic Ocean ,which it has done for hundreds of years.

Morwenstow is a delightful place to visit. We've walked the coast path and surrounding area but this was a first visit to the church. Initially the draw is the connection with the Rev Hawker who was the vicar here for 40 years. The window to his memory is an appropriate tribute. He was unstinting in his efforts to give shipwrecked sailors a decent Christian burial. There is a ship's figure head inside and a copy of it outside where sailors were buried. The view to the coast is superb and if leaving the churchyard over a stile at the far end and turning right into the field there is an excellent view of the Vicarage built to a design by Hawker with each chimney a copy of a church he had been connected with. We also visited the Rectory Tea Rooms and did a walk from Morwenstow.

An interesting church and churchyard with many shipwrecked sailors buried here. Of course, famous for its association with the rev R.S. Hawker.
