Great walk to waterfall for 6 year old
ago de 2020 • Família
We wanted to do a walk with our 6 year old who isn’t the best at long walks but this was perfect. Interesting and muddy enough for him! Managed to see the lower waterfall and the main one which he loved. We went in August and it was very muddy!

Charming Waterfall
ago de 2020 • Família
We drove up to see the waterfalls as the weather was very variable. There is very limited parking for 2/3 cars at a time. The nature reserve is lovely in better weather. The paths to the waterfall are rather treacherous, muddy and slippy even though they have made steps in the steeper areas. The waterfalls are lovely and especially when there has been a good amount of rain feeding them further up. There are no picnic places as far as I can see and no bins, so take litter home and no toilets apart from in Talgarth. We had a lovely time and will be back again. As an aside, across the road from the second passing place, there is a superb view of the old Talgarth Mental Hospital in complete dereliction.

A muddy miracle

This is a magical place of water and great vegetation - but wear your wellies as to get the best out of your visit you need to get your feet dirty!

Take your wellies in the winter
dez de 2019
We enjoyed the walk up from Talgarth and the trail was easy to find. At first the walking was good along the upper track, with plenty of fallen leaved underfoot to add to the feel of it. The trees to our right covered the slope down to the stream, and the winter sun shone through them in shafts of light.

But before too long, the path started to become muddier and was difficult to navigate in places without getting ankle deep in red mud. Before we reached the witches pool we gave up. We had our daughter with Down Syndrome with us and the mud was too slippery and gluey.

We were wearing good boots - but they were covered in mud by the time we got back to the road.

We'd like to do the walk again - in the Summer months!

Hidden Gem
mai de 2019
We walked this path for the first time earlier this year, we were surprised that it is nay far better known. The path is narrow in places but skirts the stream closely and the tress etc offer great shade from summer sun. When we walked the wild garlic was fruiting and gave a delicious aroma.

a very pleasant stroll up from the centre of Talgarth
mai de 2019 • Amigos
From the centre of Talgarth go past the Strand Cafe ( pleasant stop) and up Hospital Road climbing for about 2/3 rds of a mile.

If you take the first gate marked as the nature reserve you will have a rough, occasionally muddy, walk up beside the stream. This is a lovely woodland walk accompanied by the burble and trill of the stream.

Ignoring the first gate climb further up the lane ( tarmac) until the second gate where there is parking for 2 or 3 cars. The gate entrance here is to a skilfully graded path which provides a level walk up to the waterfall. The Waterfall ( best after rain) is a lovely spot to contemplate life before returning to Talgarth and refreshment at the Strand or the cafe at Talgarth Mill - where you can look down on the stream and remember a lovely walk.

There is local folklore that the Waterfall into the Witches' Pool is where local (suspected) witches were despatched with. But after climbing the hospital road you will doubt that anyone would expend so much energy when there was plenty of water in the village anyhow.

Another local tale is that, during the war, Rudolph Hess was confined in the Hospital which was then a lunatic asylum: however the evidence for this is very thin and circumstantial. He did spend a good deal of the war in Abergavenny ( not far away) and he was mentally unstable so it is possible.

It's up to you what you wish to believe, well during the walk anyway

Nice walk in Fresh air

First thing you have to wear a good shoes for hiking and walking in mud. You can hear the sound of water from entrance. Water was cold and natural. Make sure not to go there in rainy day.
