An absolute highlight of our trip. Thank you so much, Joao!
We opted for lunch at Quinta do Infantado, which we loved. It begins with a tour of the winery, and our host did a particularly excellent job weaving together the story of his family's vineyard with the history of Portugal, stretching from the 1800s to present day. You get unique insight from the winemaker himself on the winemaking process as well.

After the tour, you sit in his beautiful tasting room for a series of tastings and lunch courses. In our case, lunch was vegetarian (which we preferred). The food was homemade, fresh, and delicious. I've never before had melon soup, or oranges with olive oil, but I'll be making both at home in the future.

Joao's wine is high quality - both his dry wines and his port. We took a bottle of white home with us, and his ruby port was particularly memorable. Definitely worth prioritizing a visit here!

Une visite authentique et traditionnelle au coeur du Douro. Je recommande sans hésitation. Joao et son cousin on pris de leur temps pour nous faire découvrir leur domaine avec passion & en toute simplicité.

We had great experience, which was much better than one of the very large producers we visited and another boutique. We had 1 day in the Douro and arranged everything ourselves.

We got to see the harvest, taste some great port, and Joao made some great dishes for lunch such as Bacalhao with chickpeas. The only bummer was that the shipping rates don’t make sense to ship anything back to the US, but we were told which shops we can buy their port here.

This is a small producer, where the wine maker himself takes the time to walk you around and sits down with you for a tasting.

I booked the "wine lover program" aimed at people who know already something about wine and I highly recommend this tasting. Besides the winery's regular wines they also open some of the family's older bottles and this was just a wonderful experience.

We visited this vineyard as part of the tour at Barefoot George (which I highly recommend). I really enjoy visit the smaller producers, where I get to talk to the owner/winemaker, rather than listening to a canned speech by a company employee.

The name, Infantado, refers to Infante D. Pedro. The vineyard was established for the prince who became King D. Pedro IV of Portugal and D. Pedro I of Brazil. Today, the vineyard has been in the hands of the Roseira family for over a century, with its sixth generation in wine production.

We entered the dark, cool cellars, where they have some gigantic wine barrels. Everything looks really ancient. I was startled by some noise. The owner said, oh, don't worry, the bats are harmless, they eat bugs. While reassured that there is no bloodsucking fiend, I wondered how this conversation would go with a U.S, food safety inspector.

The vineyard is situated in the valley, and while it does not provide gorgeous vista, the view from the tasting room is quite nice. We got to enjoy some wonderful port wine after the tour, as we chat with the owner on everything from Vivino to the future of port wine. It was a most wonderful visit, and needless to say, we bought a few bottles so we can relive the memories at home.

På vinreise gjennom Dourodalen fikk vi vår beste opplevelse hos Quinta do Infantado! Fantastisk gjestfrihet! En vinmaker som snakker rett fra hjertet. Autentisk opplevelse med enkel men nydelig mat, samt viner med veldig høy kvalitet! Anbefales på det høyeste!

During our September visit to Oporto, our driver/guide queried us on our trip up the Douro Valley, two days later. We discussed our knowledge of Port wines, and the producers. Obviously, the major players in Port came up, and we talked about our Port collection a bit. He formulated a plan for that trip up the river, to include many of the major quintas, but also visits to some, which were more obscure, and especially in the USA. I was pleasantly surprised that he included Quinta do Infantado into our itinerary. He was pleasantly surprised that I had 3 bottles from Quinta do Infantado in my cellar.

While not as old as some of the Port Houses and Quintas (founded in 1816), and not as well-known as some others, this was just the type of visit, that I was looking for, and especially so, as we had just done many of the majors in Vila Nova di Gaia, the day before.

The Port of Quinta do Infantado is still not well-known in the USA, and until about 40 years ago, most of their grape production was sold to others, to be vinified into Port. Being a totally independent producer caused some problems, but laws were changed in the mid-80's, and Quinta do Infantado came into its own.

The staff in the tasting room was also amazed that I had not only heard of them, but owned a few bottles of their wine, and from some of the very first vintages, that they had been able to ship to the USA – two Vintage Ports, and one LBV (Late Bottled Vintage), which unfortunately was beyond its prime.

We got to do a tasting of their current line up, from a NV White Port, through Ruby and LBV (much fresher, than my bottle), to Vintage, plus two non-fortified red wines from the Douro. All were lovely, and I was just saddened, that I had not opened my Quinta do Infantado LBV.

The tasting room is fairly rustic, but comfortable. The staff was excellent, and very attentive, especially when they discovered that I was a “customer.” We did not do the tour, as our time in the Pinhão Area was limited, and our itinerary rather intense. We hope to return, and spend more time up the river, and then take a few of the tours, which were just not possible, on this trip. I would recommend about 2 hours, though we only had 1 hr., on this visit. Lovely, with lovely staff.

Upon finding the driveway to the winery, we drove slowly down the very rough cobblestone and it was unclear where to park. There was some construction/earthwork going on, which ended up being near the front of the winery (not sure if that’s normally a parking area). Anyway, once we found our way inside we did a tour with Alvaro, who is very knowledgeable and clearly understood the winemaking process. The tour was in the middle of harvest, so it was really neat to watch the winery in the production process, though it made for a fairly chaotic tour. The winery has ~46 hectares and does export to the US.

The tasting consisted of 7 wines: a 2012 dry red (fairly tart) and then a 2015 dry red – both of which were a blend of 3 local grapes; one white port (left with skin contact during fermentation, so a deeper yellow color); and then an organic, vintage, late bottle vintage (LBV), and a tawny port. All of the ports were a bit less sweet than many typical ports, and this was advertised during the tour as being the winery’s style. All wines seemed to be reasonably priced (none were incredibly expensive).

Overall things seemed slightly chaotic and disorganized during the tour, as it was in the middle of harvest and a lot was going on at the winery, so it’s fairly understandable. However, we enjoyed the tasting and asking Alvaro some questions, so it was an enjoyable experience.

Visited this quaint Quinta this afternoon and have to say so impressed by the tour and tasting experience which surpassed any other we visited in the region.

Great ports and interesting wines shown around by one of the owners (5th Generation), not rushed or pushy with selling and so knowledgeable (as you’d expect).

If you’re in the area make sure this less known Quinta is on your list, skip Croft and sone of the others as you’ll not regret it!!
