I did the Mayan Adventure Cenote and Snorkelling Tour with Eddie last weekend.
The guide was fantastic and super friendly. The cenotes were very cool, as we swam in an open and partially closed underground cenote.
After the two cenotes, we got to snorkel in Akumal where we saw stingrays and eagle rays (rare occurence), as well as many different types of fish.
Overall was a great tour and not too long.
The great parts of the tour were:
- Experiences in cenote and snorkelling
- Our Guide Eddie
- Getting to witness the sea life in their natural environment
- Transportation in AC Van
- Great group sizes
- Lunch near cenote was delicious
The negatives are as follows:
- Pickup was an issue as we were almost left behind (not the fault of the company but rather who we booked the tour with)
- Not enough time in cenote locations
- Outrageous prices for on-site photography
These three reasons are why I did not rate it 5/5.

Very fast paced, immersive and exciting adventure. Cenotes were breath taking creations of nature right out of a story book. Our guide, Marvin, was patient, knowledgeable and attentive to every member of our small group. Highly recommend this adventure!

We, an adult couple, had a blast on this excursion. Transportation was easy and quick from our Tulum hotel.
Our group was small and fun.
Miguel was our guide and I cannot express enough how he made it so much more than an excursion. He took the time to educate the children in the group. Timed each stop perfectly so we had each area nearly as to ourselves. He was kind and patient and super active and attentive.
So lucky to have had this adventure and Miguel!

Overall a good tour option if you like snorkeling. We liked the open cenote with zipline and cliff jumping option. No fish, but it was fun sorkeling in the crystal clear water.
The underground river/cenote was a bit disappointing and we've definitely done better ones. It was basically just a cave that you swam into, took photos at the far end, and swam back out. If you've done other underground rivers or cenotes, you won't be overwhelmed by this one. If it's your first one, you'll probably enjoy it though. We've done so many, the bar has been set pretty high for us by other experiences.
Snorkeling at Akumal in the lagoon was "ok" but we would have preferred free time to just snorkel on our own there. It was a lot of "follow the leader" as you all swam in a row following your guide. We're definitely not new to snorkeling so it was too beginner-friendly for us. IF we would have just been free to snorkel on our own for an hour, it would have been amazing.
The lagoon was also way too busy. They crammed too many groups in at the same time. It was confusing trying to stay together with your own group + guide. We preferred the open cenote which we visited first because our group was the only group there at the time.
Overall, this is a good tour for beginners or for groups that don't have a lot of snorkeling experience. You'll feel very safe and well guided.

Dimi was the best guide for our 3-stop snorkeling trip! Dimi was friendly & very informative but was also all about “no BS”, which we really appreciated. He made everything easy & gave us all the need-to-know info at each stop then largely let us explore on our own so we had a blast! He has a real appreciation for the environment & the Mayan culture & we’re so glad he was our guide for the day.
Experiencing 3 different ecosystems in 1 day was amazing: open water lagoon full of schools of fish & interesting underwater formations, open cenote for cliff jumping & zip lining w/fish pedicure, underground cave cenote (COLD!) that was the most unique experience by far. Finishing with a local buffet lunch was both needed (we were worn out) & delicious!
We packed A LOT in from 9am-2pm!
We highly recommend this tour and Dimi!

We took this tour from Bahia Príncipe Tulum. To give it one star is generous . And I’m not just grinding an axe here. We were rushed. Our tour guide’ was disinterested, not nearly as knowledgeable as he should be about where we were and what we were seeing , seemed like he didn’t want to be there. Like that. We saw….nothing. The zip line was lame. The lunch that was included would have been better if it came from McDonalds. There were few fish - tropical or otherwise. We spent almost as much time in the transport van as we did for the entire outing which was supposed to be from 7:40am to 3:30pm. We were back at the hotel by 1:30pm. Waste of time. Waste of money. Bienvenio a Mexico. 🇲🇽

This was an amazing experience. The water in inlet was what you would expect if you have snorkeled in the ocean before. But the cenote and the cave were spectacular. The cave in particular was my favorite. Such beauty.
Jonathan was our very experienced guide and he made the day fun, informative, and full of wonder. I highly recommend this.
Don't forget to lather up the sunscreen before you leave your resort in the morning, you will not be allowed to put any on at the snorkeling locations because of the damage that it can do to the eco systems.

We had a great excursion with Laura. Our tour group was small, only 8 people and all couples. Laura had us all picked up early, snd rides were coordinated so the hotel stops were all close to eachother. Not a huge amount of time shuttling in between hotels. We were the first tour group for the company to the cenotes that day. She kept us moving, while allowing us enough time to enjoy, so that we the first people able to enjoy each place - open cenotes, cavern cenotes, and snorkeling in Ya-Kul.
As other review say, no additional hidden fees or taxes required by the tour. And the cenotes and lagoon were private for the tour company so not overly crowded.
Thank you Laura for your energy and enthusiasm!! We enjoyed exploring the natural beauty of Riviera Maya!!

We did the snorkeling, cenote and zip line half day tour. We got picked up at our resort and the drive was great. Lots to look at.
Our guide (Laura) was top notch. She made the day so much fun for our entire family. She was accommodating (we had a five year old with us so needed a little extra TLC).
The snorkeling was in a secluded area. It was a little murky but that's because it wasn't out in the ocean. The cenote was amazing. The kids loved the zip line and jumping off the cliffs.
Highly recommend this adventure.

It does but the snorkel is very basic. There's not a blowout valve. Some of my group brought their own but I didn't. It was fine. There are very nice life vests too.

I see that souvenir photos are available to purchase. Does that mean we are not allowed to take our own pictures with cameras or phones?
Escrita a 4 de outubro de 2021
You are allowed to take your own photos but I suggest you also purchase the professional ones. They are really good. If you can, ask for Sosa. He’s the best guide.

Is it suitable for people with no past experience in Snorkeling? Do you have pickups from The Reef 28?
Escrita a 24 de agosto de 2019
Everyone has a first time snorkeling, and the guides will help you put on equipment. None of the stops is scary. I have done this trip 3-4 times over many years. Whoever picks you up will be with you the whole day. By the time you reach first stop, by chatting in the van he will know who might need help. Since there are numerous van loads daily, the stops may be in different orders. The open cenote and cave are not too strenuous. Yal-Ku lagoon is big. They will offer to keep you swimming over an hour, but you can quit earlier. Enjoy!

hi my family and i are traveling to Playa del Carmen next week and we will like to know if we can go snorkeling if one of us dont know how to swim? Is there any type of accommodation for people like this? just wondering?
Escrita a 8 de agosto de 2019
I agree with Sunset151. We had several people who couldn't swim. The life vests and flippers help you stay at the surface and move through the water. The guides quickly adjust to meet any participant, and offer kind, supportive encouragement. They were some of the best guides I've ever had on any trip.

Where would I put my belongings like a change of clothes and such while snorkling? Is it more for experienced snorklers? I have never tried it but am thinking about it because I have many aquariums at home and love fish
Escrita a 2 de abril de 2019
Your belongings are safe in their van or in the lockers as mentioned by Sunset151. Plan on a long-sleeve rash guard to minimize your need for sunscreen. Your face will be in the water, and you really shouldn't need much on your face as a result. Biodegradable sunscreen is a must, if you feel you need it. I chose to wear a long sleeve rash guard and board shorts so I could go sun-screen free and reduce damage to fragile corals.
This trip is lovely. One stop is a colder, darker cavern, and you won't see fish or things in that water. Cool, otherworldly experience, though. The cenote has a large dive spot, and then a shallower area that looks like Ireland-green but underwater. Tiny, tiny fish are all around, and delightful. The isleta (where ocean meets fresh water) has a bit more current, and you will see more variety of fish.
When you first get in the water, if you are new to snorkeling, hang out near the steps so you can adjust your mask and make sure it's not leaking. Once your mask is positioned correctly, it will be amazing to see so much underwater. Enjoy!

Do you do pickups from any hotels/hostals in playa del carmen?
I will be staying at a hostal in playa del carmen and was wondering if the pickup is at 7am for everyone..?
Thanks!

My husband and I are staying at Ocean Maya Royal, is there a pickup there? We are coming next week?
Escrita a 5 de março de 2019
I believe there is. I stayed there a couple years ago. Best bet is look for the Expedia shirt at the hotel and tell them you want to go snorkeling with Mayan Adventures. (Other tour booking groups may book them as well but I prefer the Expedia people for service, refunds if needed etc)
As far as I know they’ll pick up at pretty much any of the resorts.

I am investigating this for our family of 4 and wondering how we determine the departure time from our hotel. The tour operator says 7:00 am but I’ve seen people mention they were picked up at 10:40. We are at the Grand Sunset Princess. Thank you!
Escrita a 29 de dezembro de 2018
This is a half day tour, so you will either be in the morning group (as we were) or the afternoon. We were picked up at 7:10 for our morning tour, and our hotel was about 30 min from the dock. I would be that those who were picked up at 10:40 we booked on the afternoon tour, and likely their hotel was more than 30 min from the dock. We sailed around 9, and then returned around 1:45 or so.
